Parents frequently teach their children about “stranger danger,” but as the article found on School Counseling by Heart points out that is not where the danger lies for children, it lies with people the children already know. According to statistics found on internet101.com, 1 in 4 girls and 1 in 6 boys will be sexually abused before they reach adulthood. 30-40% of children are abused by a family member and 50% by someone outside the family whom they know and trust. This type of predator utilizes grooming as a mechanism to abuse children. This article empowers parents to teach their children about recognizing grooming behaviors and responses when they feel uncomfortable.
