UT Shield

The University of Texas System amended UTS 124 to strengthen their commitment to promoting a safe and secure environment at all of its institutions. This policy expands the number of persons expected to have background checks on file if they work with child care facilities or youth camps. It mandates that all personnel (employees, volunteers and personnel of third party) of camps/programs for minors held by/at The University of Texas System campus property are required to undergo criminal background checks as well as training and examination to enhance their sensitivity to the warning signs of sexual abuse and child molestation as stated in Texas Education Code, Section 51.976.

The training and examination program on warning signs of sexual abuse and child molestation are required for all personnel (employees, volunteers and personnel of third party) of camps/programs for minors that meet ALL of the following criteria:

  1. On the UT Austin campus OR operated by UT Austin anywhere;
  2. Have recreational, athletic, religious, or educational activities for the campers/participants; and
  3. Have campers/participants who are minors (under the age of 18) and are not employees of UT Austin.

The available training module is approved by the Texas Department of State Health Services. The training module (including the exam) will take approximately 1-hour to complete (as mandated by state law) and is derived from Texas state statutes as well as policies found within The University of Texas System. Each camp/program director will work with the youth protection program director to provide a complete list of employees, volunteers and personnel of third party camps associated with each camp. The youth protection program director must ensure each employee, volunteer and person of third party camps has completed the training before the camp/program begins. If they have not, that employee, volunteer and/or person of the third party camp cannot work in any camp/program.
